Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstess, Nightwoods, and Old School

The common attribute of these three books is – they are all relatively short reads. The first book one of the main characters is looking for a grander life; the second book reveals a murder mystery near a lake; and the third book the main character tries to keep it a secret why he has a scholarship.
